To do so, and in collaboration with civil society organizations, DATARights will first precisely establish applicable rules regarding the right of access to personal data, based on the latest case law, and evaluate how these rules are implemented by data controllers. A field study will then be conducted to document the concrete steps and potential difficulties involved in filing access requests by a panel of research participants. The retrieved data may be voluntarily shared, in full compliance with the GDPR, to collectively analyze their structure and potential uses - both for the data subjects themselves and for academic research.

However, accessing the data needed to study these platforms is complex, as they largely function as black boxes. Several recent academic publications have advocated for for the collective use of the individual right of access to personal data - granted by Article 15 of the GDPR - as a way to open up these black boxes. The project thus aims at operationalising this largely theoretical proposition across various fields, such as online audiovisual services, platform workers, or the study of how young people use of social networks.
